The Wall Street Journal has reported that the Vioxx arthritis drug from Merck & Company may have led to more than 27,000 heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths.
Citing a study by the Food and Drug Administration, The Journal reported that an estimated 27,785 heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths could have been avoided if alternative drugs had been used rather than Vioxx.
A painkiller, Vioxx primarily has been used in the treatment of arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, painful menstruation and other types of acute pain. If you or someone you know has taken Vioxx for these or other conditions and suffered a heart attack, stroke or other serious cardiovascular illness, you may be entitled to compensation. According to analysts, Merck faces the possibility of a number of lawsuits in connection with Vioxx, which was recalled on September 30, 2004.
